Looking at a Woman Essay -- Literary Analysis, Scott Russell
Women have made great advancements in improving their rights and roles within society and are now less likely to be viewed as inferior by males. Nevertheless, they are still facing many challenges including being perceived as objects and being expected to dress and behave a certain way. In his essay ââ¬Å"Looking at Women,â⬠Scott Russell Sanders analyzes how men often perceive women as objects because of their indecent wardrobe and their willingness to put their bodies on display. In her essay ââ¬Å"Why Women Smile,â⬠Amy Cunningham explains the value of a smile and how it does not always reflect how a woman is truly feeling on the inside. Both essays spend much time looking at women and how they are under the constant scrutiny from those around them. What the essays of Sanders and Cunningham illustrate is that, while trying to shake old stereotypes, women find their identities constructed from their external appearance. The problem is and remains that women are complic it in the shallow construction of female identity that trades depth for surface because they have bought into the idea that a woman must trade on her external appearance to succeed in her public life. Women celebrities often remark that the media negatively displays women and sexually objectifies them through many mediums such as film, TV, video games, and advertisements. However, there are many female stars that are willing to pose provocatively for a wide variety of menââ¬â¢s magazines such as Maxim, a European magazine targeted at men. Their hypocrisy in shooting the pictures invalidates the argument that men exploit female sexuality, as they are likewise eager to take those pictures. These women are so quick to jump at an opportunity to pose seductively for the camera, a... ... be viewed and represented. It is difficult to believe that they want to be understood as smart bright women when they appear so artificial and vain. Pretty looks can only take a woman so far before she must rely on her intelligence and skills. From their apparel to their body language to their facial expressions, women are constantly being examined by the public, and moreover by men. It is a cause and effect relationship since men looking at women makes women feel like objects, which in return makes them want to become like pieces of toys for men to stare at and play with. Sanders and Cunningham make it apparent that women are much more than their appearance, and have a lot more to offer than a provocative picture or a plastic smile. However, it is up to the women to change the way they portray themselves to the world if they want to be seen in a different light.

Just Like Us Essay
The immigration problem in America has been dividing the document and undocumented people, in the book Just Like Us, by Helen Thorpe, she tells the story of four Mexican ââ¬â American girls who live in Denver Colorado. Marisela and Yadira, were born in Mexico and are undocumented while Clara was born in Mexico too it is a permanent resident, and Elissa is a U.S citizen. They are best friend and their relationship it is not affected by their immigration status until they graduated from high school and they have to face the challenge of looking for new ways to pay for their college education. Undocumented adolescents graduating from high school donââ¬â¢t have many opportunities to get scholarships and to go to college. Most of them end up working with a fake Social Security Card with a minimum wage. In the congress exist some oppressors of undocumented people like Tom Tancredo, who are the kind of people whose heritage comes from another country, but who have just forgotten wher e they came from, and become radical people who think that every undocumented person is a killer, a negative person for the American society. On the other hand, we have Major John Hickenlooper, who was trying to help undocumented immigrants giving them some opportunities to keep growing. The girlââ¬â¢s point of view about world and each other comes to play when they are trying to obtain a scholarship. Because of competitiveness to obtain a scholarship, the girlââ¬â¢s relationship changes. At the end they graduated and achieved their degree. Clara becomes a U.S. citizen. Marisela and Yadira were able to apply for the DREAM Act, so they legal. Elissa was unemployed, and Marisela would be a mom! As the girls become of aware of their legal status Immigration Policy, have affected not only the girlââ¬â¢s relationship with each other. But for all other illegal was well. Because of our Immigration policy, many Immigrants have more problems in achieve their dreams. Therefore, we mu st change our Immigration policy so that it will not make it difficult for young immigrants from getting a good education, changing our perception of young illegal immigrants and how young undocumented view themselves. Undocumented students as Marisela and Yadira struggle to be seen for who they really are and not to be just treated like criminals; they just need to be given opportunities to show what they can do for this country, like Clara and Elissa. One area that Thorpe presents to us is that not everyone gets to have a college education and is able to afford it, whereas every American citizen is able to go their college because they have a Social Security card and can afford it. Undocumented students like Marisela and Yadira donââ¬â¢t have a Social Security card and they have give up on their dreams of going to college. The process of the undocumented students going to college is that they have to apply for scholarship as international students, so they require more money th an a citizen or resident. Yadira got into Colorado College. ââ¬Å"They accepted me, but they didnââ¬â¢t offer me any money. So itââ¬â¢ s like, if you have $37,000 lying around, you can come hereâ⬠(Thorpe 60). This was a big reason for Yadira to forget definitively this scholarship, but she didnââ¬â¢t give up. She struggle and she is close to getting one before Marisela, because ââ¬Å"Each year, about fifty thousand undocumented immigrants graduate from high school in the United States.â⬠(Thorpe 60) And to be honest it is a shame that from this enormous number just a few can get into a college, every immigrant graduate from high school should be able to reach higher education, because everybody en in the world has this right and the people in charge of undocumented students is Senate Committee, they should help these adolescents. As an example of how difficult it is for undocumented students to get on education is the story about Marisela and Yadira. They had completed applications to University of Denver, and had gone to the campus for hastily arranged interviews. It was really tough for them, because they were both fighting for one scholarship. Yadira won it, because she pursue d her dream and than her best friend Marisela. To know that she got the scholarship Yadira called the University while Marisela watched her friendââ¬â¢s face as she spoke to the woman. Yadira looked back to Marisela the whole time, and she asked: ââ¬Å"You got it, huh? Yadira hung up the phone. ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠Yadira replied, she was crying (Thorpe 80). Marisela has to deal with this pain inside on her, because she was happy that her best friend got this triumph, but this means that she will not get this scholarship. As we can tell the process of obtaining a good education is really hard for undocumented people, it makes it even harder to compete against someone you know. Hard moments like this makes it difficult for undocumented adolescents has to deal with in obtain a good education. Another topic that Thorpe presents is the difficulty of changing peopleââ¬â¢s points of view. In fact, when congress is debating why immigrants come to America illegally, should they receiv e citizenship? Luke is a really close friend of the girls at Denver University. In the story represents people who are conservative view and very narrow mind. In particular instance, Luke express that opinion when he said: ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t agree with giving them all citizenshipâ⬠¦why even have immigration law if you just let everybody in!â⬠(Thorpe 250) This is the reason why Marisela manifest not to be so close to him anymore. He is a great person, but his ignorance takes Marisela away from him. Luke didnââ¬â¢t care about their ethnicity, however he didnââ¬â¢t know where are they from, and with his comments were hurting Marisela and Yadira feelings, this is the reason why they never were really honest with him, and hide most of their lives. Most conservative talks about undocumented immigrants come to affect the American economy, avoiding taxes, free loaders, public schools, and food stamps. And also Conservatives thinks that most of the illegal are criminals. The issue of welfare is one point where we see the conservative viewpoint ââ¬Å"They go to San Francisco General and they get free health care that we pay for.â⬠(Thorpe 250). Undocumented people just to come to the United States looking for a better life, more opportunities, to give their families more a better future. We didnââ¬â¢t know, but in their country they are poor, and they do not have enough food so just deal with it day by day. We cannot even talk about healthy issues; because they cannot expend money on it, because their kids or themselves will not be able eat that day. These are a couple of reasons why they just to take a risk and coming to fulfill the ââ¬Å"American Dream.â⬠Saying that undocumented people who want be like an American citizen by paying some form of taxes, and really are hard workers doing those kind of jobs than Americans doesnââ¬â¢t want to do. Juan Apocada is a young undocumented boy who was on the news for speaking out about his st ruggle about obtaining a scholarship, a benefactor who really knows his legal status didnââ¬â¢t care about it, just help him providing the money for his studies. Suddenly congressman Tancredo, called the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to see if his childââ¬â¢s family are illegal. ââ¬Å"Is it just me or does anyone else fin more amazing that our government can track a cow born in Canada almost three years ago right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washingtonâ⬠¦but they are unable to locate eleven million illegal aliens wondering around our countryâ⬠(Thorpe 49) He believes that American culture had strayed from the rule of the law. This congressman forgot where is he from. Even his family was almost deported, but he didnââ¬â¢t care about undocumented, and became one of the most stronger opposites people on the undocumented immigrant topic. He instead on thinking how to deport them, should start thinking how to solve their problems, becaus e his family heritage if from outside this country, and his family was one of them. Document people didnââ¬â¢t have knowledge about undocumented immigrants, and they just based their opinion about what they hear and see on the television, radio, or gossip. As a result of them we have that people got a wrong idea of them, and people disrespect them, and didnââ¬â¢t give them the same treat as document people, they must receive same respect and values that legal people have, because a legal paper donââ¬â¢t give us more respect, itââ¬â¢s just a status inside a country. Something that makes us better itââ¬â¢s our development inside a society and giving the best of us to our world. Thorpe also comes across show the self-realization for the immigrants who have thought they are some things right, ends up being wrong in the United States. This is because undocumented people want to be identify, they need to have some identifications as any other document person, so they find their own way to do it. As some of the girls are undocumented, they are actually donââ¬â¢t have how to get a job or get a driver license, and they need to identify their selves with people, so they just have one solution to falsify ID, social security cards, driver licenses, etc. When Marisela believe that even though she had fake driver license, she thought she would not get caught, ââ¬Å"It hit me when I wanted to a driver license and I couldnââ¬â¢t. So I started driving with a Mexican driverââ¬â¢s licenseââ¬âa fake. And that when I realize how I was going to grow upââ¬âdoing everything the wrong wayâ⬠(Thorpe 25). She has to get a fake drivers license, because first at all she was an undocumented person, and second would be more safety for her go to school in her own car than in the bus. Yadira also took this decision, sh e is very conscious about doing things in proper order, and because she needs to get a job decided to get a fake Social Security card. At the end she shows it to her friends. ââ¬âââ¬Å"Oh guess what?â⬠She volunteered. ââ¬Å"I just bought a fake Social Security card. Do you want to see it?â⬠(Thorpe 161) Certain situations force her or anyone to do the wrong thing. Yadira situation is that her mom Alma was in Mexico with her new baby sister and she couldnââ¬â¢t work, and her stepfather works in America but his pay does not cover the cost of living in America. Therefore her family needs her to get a job. And the only way to get a job in America is providing a Social Security Card to each place that you are going to apply. As far as we know, her family is not resident therefore she had to obtain a fake Social Security ID. People might think that getting these fake documents could mean that these girls would be worried about getting caught. But itââ¬â¢s not that wa y; they feel a little more secure when they have this kind of documents, because these documents give them some identity that they are missing since they cross the Mexican ââ¬â American border. These children and adolescents are not guilty for their parentââ¬â¢s decision of crossing the border illegally. They coming to the U.S. for a better future, this country give them a better live, a future were they would be alive and can be someone, because some of their parents come just barely speaking their own language, sometimes they donââ¬â¢t even know how to write, so when they arrived to America itââ¬â¢s that they work in jobs than Americans donââ¬â¢t want to do, they work really hard. Therefore parents expected from their children a better live, better education, having at least two languages, knowing something else that clean bathrooms, and cook, they want a better future that they canââ¬â¢t afford or just even think of it in their own country. So the U.S. governme nt should cover these obstacles that these children and adolescents have to give them a more chances in live.

Responsibility for the murder of King Duncan? Essay
It is hard to decide which of the two characters, Macbeth or Lady Macbeth, holds the most responsibility for the murder of King Duncan, as it is possible to think of both of them being equally to blame. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are both very ambitious characters and this will be looked at in this essay as part of the analysis of their contribution to Duncanââ¬â¢s murder. This essay will show how Lady Macbeth continuously influences Macbeth and Macbeth follows her every instruction. My essay will discuss both charactersââ¬â¢ involvement and it will determine which one is the most culpable for King Duncanââ¬â¢s death. My first point will look at how Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to continue developing the plan for King Duncanââ¬â¢s demise. The first time that we see Lady Macbeth playing a part in the murder, is her reaction to the content of Macbethââ¬â¢s letter. Immediately after reading the letter her initial decision is that, Macbeth must become king and she shows great determination, this can be supported with: ââ¬Å"and shalt be / What thou art promised;â⬠Merely a short time later Lady Macbeth says, ââ¬Å"To catch the nearest way.â⬠By this she means that Macbeth must become king by any means necessary. Yet she is not convinced that Macbeth is capable of committing the crime himself and so she goes onto say she will: ââ¬Å"Pour my spirits in thine ear.â⬠In this she is expressing how she will tell Macbeth what to do, and we can be sure that she is already developing a plan in order to claim the crown, and this can be seen when she says, ââ¬Å"To have thee crowned withal.â⬠Lady Macbeth is also trying to give Macbeth some of her character, as she does not believe that he could commit the murder without her help. The audience can see Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s language symbolising evil when she says, ââ¬Å"blanket of the dark.â⬠Lady Macbeth wants the blanket to be dark because light would represent God and goodness and not killing Duncan, whereas Lady Macbeth needs darkness and Satan to help her to plan the deed. The blanket represents a cloud obscuring her conscience and preventing her from realising that her intended murder is wrong. Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s conscience knows that murder is wrong but wants to call upon the supernatural powers to stop her conscience. This makes her guiltier as she understands how wrong the murder is and yet still wants to continue. It is clear that Lady Macbeth has not only got Macbethââ¬â¢s interests at heart and is fully aware that she would become queen if Macbeth carries out the murder of Duncan. Just before this Lady Macbeth talks of wanting Macbeth to hurry home: ââ¬Å"Hie thee hither,â⬠We can conclude that this means Lady Macbeth wants the assassination to be carried out as soon as possible. During this passage we can clearly see Lady Macbeth for who she really is, and this is the first time that she is introduced to the play and immediately she reveals herself as being a deceitful and malicious character. Macbeth too shows his wicked nature when he looks to the witches for advice and information, and says, ââ¬Å"Stay, you imperfect speakers. Tell me more.â⬠Even though Macbeth knows that the witches are evil and are related to Satan, he wants to know more about the prophecies. Macbeth also feeds lines to Banquo so that Banquo will confirm what Macbeth wants to hear, ââ¬Å"You shall be king.â⬠Macbeth cannot believe that the witches have prophesised that he will become king when he says, ââ¬Å"To be king / Stands not within the prospect of belief,â⬠However what Banquo says does not stop Macbethââ¬â¢s determination later in the play. Macbeth is desperate to hear more from the witches and to know more about being king, when he says, ââ¬Å"Speak, I charge you.â⬠The witches then disappear, and after the departure Macbeth discovers that another prophecy is found to be true. Macbeth believes the witches and ignores Banquoââ¬â¢s warnings that the prophecies are rooted in evil: ââ¬Å"What, can the devil speak true?â⬠Banquo does not want to have faith in the witches and believes that they are dangerous. In contrast Macbeth believes that he will be king even though the prophecies are a dangerous basis for his actions. Lady Macbeth decides to ignore the danger of the witches when she calls upon supernatural powers to help her: ââ¬Å"Take my milk for gall.â⬠It is clear from this that Lady Macbeth wants to rid her body of anything that may potentially hold her back from committing the deed. Clearly Lady Macbeth is desperate to be able to arrange the murder, and believes that by calling upon supernatural powers it will be possible, when Lady Macbeth says, ââ¬Å"Come, thick night, / And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell,â⬠and, ââ¬Å"No compunctious visitings of nature / Shake my fell purpose,â⬠The audience can see Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s language becoming increasingly evil when she says, ââ¬Å"thick night,â⬠and ââ¬Å"smoke of hell,â⬠Lady Macbeth wants to have a dark night for the deed to occur, so that there is secrecy for the deed. She knows that if the night is dark then she will feel dark inside her and this will help her to perform the murderous action, this is an example of pathetic fallacy. Lady Macbeth says that the smoke is from hell and this represents the passion and desire and her evil desire to work with Satan on this sinful deed. Hell is also described as being torturous and burning, so ââ¬Å"smoke of hellâ⬠is very evil language that Lady Macbeth uses. Then when Lady Macbeth hears of King Duncanââ¬â¢s arrival, she does not think of preparations for his stay but of his death: ââ¬Å"He brings great news.â⬠Her murderous plot can now continue, and we also see that Lady Macbeth is unwilling to let destiny take its course and wants to make her own future. This thought continues through the whole play up until the final point where the murder is committed, which can be seen when she says, ââ¬Å"I feel now the future in the instant.â⬠Macbeth also wants to make his own destiny and shows his first thought of murder when he says, ââ¬Å"My thought, whose murderâ⬠This is halfway through Macbethââ¬â¢s speech having just met the three witches, and Macbeth thinks of killing Duncan again when saying, ââ¬Å"Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair.â⬠This idea has not been put into Macbethââ¬â¢s mind by anyone other than himself. Macbeth becomes very confused and disorientated in his understanding of what is right and what is wrong, shown when he says, ââ¬Å"This supernatural soliciting / Cannot be ill cannot be good.â⬠When saying, ââ¬Å"This supernatural soliciting,â⬠Shakespeare is showing that Macbeth knows that the witches have sought him. However is unsure as to whether he thinks it to be good or bad. Macbeth does not want to be associated with the witches however he also likes the idea of being king and is torn between right and wrong. Right and wrong continue to be blurred in his mind through the play up until Macbeth actually commits the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth is trying to say that what he can imagine is so horrific that it is worse than what could happen in life now, when he says, ââ¬Å"Present fears / Are less than horrible imaginings.â⬠Soon after the three witches have left Macbeth shows a greedy desire: ââ¬Å"Two truths are told,â⬠This particularly gluttonous desire continues throughout the play. Macbeth clearly knows that there would be great results for him, and his wife as a consequence of King Duncanââ¬â¢s demise, and this can be seen when he says, ââ¬Å"With his surcease, success,â⬠However, Macbeth does not think about this much longer as Banquo discourages him for thinking about the prophecies any more when saying, ââ¬Å"Time and hour runs through the roughest day.â⬠Yet Macbeth continues to think of the prophecies when he writes a letter to his wife. Having received the letter from Macbeth, Lady Macbeth chooses the path of persuading Macbeth to bring to an end any doubts about the murder. Firstly her main involvement, which is her consistent influence on Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is questioning Macbethââ¬â¢s bravery and calling him a coward when saying, ââ¬Å"Wouldst thou have that / Which thou esteemââ¬â¢st the ornament of life,â⬠She then continues to call Macbeth a coward when she goes on to say, ââ¬Å"Live a coward in thine own esteem,â⬠Now Lady Macbeth tries to undermine Macbeth: ââ¬Å"What beast was it then/ That made you break this enterprise to me?â⬠Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth that she would do anything for him and so he must also, when she says, ââ¬Å"Had I so sworn / As you have done to this.â⬠Lady Macbeth is using a variety of tactics to try and manipulate Macbeth to murder King Duncan, as best she can, which is eventually successful. Once Macbeth is fully coerced to the idea of committing the murder, he still has reservations. Lady Macbeth then reveals that she has schemed a plan and this is when she says, ââ¬Å"What cannot you and I perform upon / Thââ¬â¢unguarded Duncan?â⬠Showing how Lady Macbeth decides that murder is the best option as it is already planned, and that she is so keen on the idea. The whole murder is developed down to whom they shall blame it upon: ââ¬Å"His spongy officers, who shall bear the guilt / of our great quell?â⬠Showing Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s incredible determination to continue with the murder, despite Macbethââ¬â¢s worries. However, once Lady Macbeth embeds the plan into Macbethââ¬â¢s mind, he continues to carry out the murder, following her instructions. This can be seen when Macbeth has a hallucination of a dagger in front of him. Macbeth is very confused when he says, ââ¬Å"A dagger of the mind, a false creation,â⬠and also ââ¬Å"Witchcraft celebrates / Pale Hecateââ¬â¢s offââ¬â¢rings,â⬠His language shows that there is evil within him and it is not just coming from external sources, such as the witches. Macbeth is talking to the dagger, and revealing that it leads him to what he wants to do, to murder King Duncan, when he says, ââ¬Å"Thou marshallââ¬â¢st me the way I was going,â⬠Macbeth knows what he is going to do, when he says, ââ¬Å"On thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood.â⬠This is his conscience trying to crush the idea, telling him that he is going to commit a murder and that it is morally wrong. ââ¬Å"Horrorâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fatal visionâ⬠, ââ¬Å"bloo dy businessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"wicked dreams abuse.â⬠The language shows that Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as being absolutely evil, and this is because these words relate to the murder of King Duncan and show that the evil has risen from within Macbeth himself. When Macbeth prepares to commit the murder he has a fear that he may be discovered and that people will realise it was him who murdered King Duncan and not the guards who are to be blamed, this is when he says, ââ¬Å"Hear not my steps, which way they walk,â⬠As Macbeth leaves to commit the murder his last words are, ââ¬Å"Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell / That summons thee to heaven or to hell.â⬠Here Macbeth is cold, determined and purposeful, and Macbeth does not show any doubt as he leaves to carry out the deed at the end of the soliloquy. This essay clearly shows which character is most responsible for the demise of Duncan. Evidently Lady Macbeth is responsible in the way that she was determined at all times and only had one momentary doubt throughout the whole play. Looking at the consequences after the murder, Lady Macbeth does go on to kill herself. This illustrates that Lady Macbeth regrets the decision that she made and that she bears the guilt of the murder. In contrast to this Macbeth committed the crime without any doubt even though he had doubted before he was coerced to continue with the murder. Having murdered once Macbeth continued to murder, seeming to have acquired a taste for it, supplying us with the evidence that Macbeth was more responsible for the murder, due to his actually carrying out the deed and continuing to murder other innocent parties without a second thought.

Holographic Technology
In 1989, Robert Zemicks made a movie starring Michael J. Fox called Back to the Future Part II. Unlike its predecessor, this film saw the protagonist Marty McFly, not going into the past to right wrongs and alter his family history, but going into the future to step in and prevent his childrenââ¬â¢s terrible fate. Comedy and flux capacitor aside, Zemeciksââ¬â¢ future shows several technological advances that captured the imaginations of not only the generation who were of age at the time of the films release but also generations since.Today, someone has crafted self lacing Nikes, tablet devices, and the hoverboard technology seen in the film is being researched. One stand out piece of tech that is often referenced, other than the flying car, was the holographic shark that jumps out from a marquee and tries to eat Marty. Despite the rudimentary appearance of the Jaws shark that tries to virtually take Mr. McFlyââ¬â¢s life, it indeed is an interesting idea. Holographic Technol ogy: The Future of MultimediaHolographic technology is nothing new to the world of science fiction but with todayââ¬â¢s technological advancements science fiction is moving off the screen an into our every days lives with holograms following suit. Several companies worldwide have beuan research and implementation of this exciting new 3D tech. This new technology offers an array of possible applications ranging from interactive learning experiences, highly engaging entertainment experiences and an entirely new way to present graphics and multimedia elements.I will research how holographic technology works to better understand what is behind the tech itself, the major players producing holographic technology to learn about where we are with the current state of holographic technology, look into the more cutting edge iterations of holograms to see where the technology is heading to be aware of what can be expected in the future and finally explore the ways that holographic technolog y applies to our field to enhance and revolutionize the possibilities of multimedia technology.
